Lightweight, utilitarian design that meets the needs of a yogi on the go. Durable, high-traction, biodegradable material ensures long lasting performance that is good for the environment.
Commuting on your bike to a yoga class can sometimes pose a problem. Yoga mats are generally long, clunky blocks of weight that are awkward to carry. Whether biking to yoga class or packing a mat to take with you on your vacation, they are not the most travel friendly item. YOGO has solved these conundrums with their brilliantly designed, commuter friendly yoga mats.
When the package (barely the size of a shoe box) arrived at my door, I could not recall what on Earth I had ordered. Upon opening the minimalist packaging I was surprised to find my new Ultralight YOGO Restoration Edition mat. The package barely weighed 3 pounds over all and I was pleased to see that all product literature was printed on the packaging itself (no wasteful inserts that almost always end up in the trash). I excitedly pulled the mat out of the recycled cardboard packaging and took a moment to examine this unorthodox, folded yoga mat (yes, I said FOLDED).
At 1.5 mm thick, the mat beats out all others for lightness. I particularly appreciated its thin profile as I prefer a thinner mat for practicing arm balances. Thicker mats often tend to cause wrist pain – the reverse rotation and pressure on the metacarpal bones can cause damage to connecting tissues that run the lateral length of ones forearm. The additional padding of other mats also reduces the ability of ones fingers to provide stability in handstands, bakasana, and even plank.
Just because the mat is thin doesn’t mean that it offers minimal traction. In fact, my YOGO mat is made of biodegradable tree rubber and is some of the most tactile material I’ve ever practiced on. It performed well in a dry environment, and gave me a surprising amount of traction in a hot yoga class (without a yoga towel). I felt extremely grounded in downward facing dog and able to grip with my entire foot in standing balances. The mat is made with the right combination of high-traction on a thinner surface.
The other feature, which is unique to the YOGO, are the durable, multipurpose straps that are built into the mat. The straps help keep the mat folded tightly when not in use (it folds into a package about 12 inches long and 5 inches wide), but can also be used to attach the mat to your backpack – perfect for bike-commuters on their way to a yoga class. You can also use the straps to hang the mat from a towel bar after washing, allowing the mat to air dry without any creases – brilliant!
Over all, I am extremely impressed with the Ultralight YOGO mat. The quality of the product is further reinforced by the responsible mission of the company. For every Restoration Edition sold, YOGO plants one tree in Central America and provide educational training to organic farmers in the surrounding communities. I highly recommend these mats for anyone who likes to take their practice with them as they travel, or for the daily commuter. Well done, YOGO!
